New England

Newport, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and the Maine coast.

New England is the American East Coast’s summer cruising ground and its sailing capital. Newport is the base, with the islands of Block, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket a day’s sail across Rhode Island and Nantucket sounds, and Cape Cod and Boston beyond.

Further north the Maine coast is a different proposition: granite, spruce, fog and thousands of islands, with lobster-pot buoys everywhere and few marinas. It rewards a yacht that anchors and a crew that navigates. The fleet moves south to Florida and the Caribbean in the autumn.

Season
June to September; Maine is best in July and August, Newport in September.
