US Virgin Islands

St Thomas, St John and St Croix, next door to the BVI.

The US Virgins are the western half of the Virgin Islands, an hour from the BVI and sharing their trade winds and their sheltered channel. St Thomas is the base with an international airport; St John next door is two-thirds national park, with the bays of its north shore among the best anchorages in the Caribbean.

Most charters here cross to the BVI and back, clearing customs each way. St Croix, forty miles south across open water, is the least visited of the three and the most distinct.
