Bow Thrusters

A transverse propeller in the bow for close-quarters handling.

A bow thruster pushes the front of the boat sideways, which makes berthing stern-to in a crosswind, the everyday manoeuvre of the Mediterranean, a great deal easier for a short-handed crew. It is standard on most new motor yachts above 12 metres and a common retrofit on older ones.

Electric thrusters are fine for a few seconds at a time; hydraulic or proportional ones can be held on. The listing’s particulars usually say which, and the broker will know the rest.
